TV Sound

Problem
Statement

Why are the commercials so loud?  While we won’t try to evaluate that question here, the Mute Button could be more useful

Solution

Instead of being an “on/off” switch for TV sound, I propose that the mute button have three settings:

 - Normal (“loud,” or fully adjusted volume)

 - Quiet.  This new setting would allow the volume to be lowered to ˝ of normal, so that louder portions of the show/commercials would be “tolerable”

 - Mute (similar to “mute” now)

Remarks
Explanation

Just like “3-way light bulbs,” the intermediate setting for sound would be very useful, especially for those with hearing difficulties who normally listen to TV at an elevated volume.  This would allow them to “step it down” to a reasonable level for portions of the program/commercial that may not be as interesting.
