Problem |
Lobbyists are a small group representing special interests, who
steer vast sums of resources into their own pockets, for the benefit of
themselves and/or the few, at the expense of “the rest of us” |
|
Solution |
What if lobbyists had to compete for funding by convincing people
that their product or service was necessary to a local community, or the American
public? The company lobbying would be
required to use their own money to convince local or national populations
that the changes they seek are worthwhile and beneficial. They could do this through television and print advertising at
their own expense. The funding sought and its use would be publicly stated. The issue could then voted-on, listing the pros and cons of
each, the way we vote to approve the use of bonds to fund the building of
schools. |

Remarks |
For example, the government subsidizes petroleum companies to
research and develop oil explorations and operations, while the CEOs are
making yearly salaries in the 10’s of millions, and the petroleum companies
are raking in record profits. I am all for free enterprise and entrepreneurial spirit, but
don’t show me a tattered hole in your left pocket while your right pocket is
full of gold. |
