Problem |
Lane Change Restrictions In order to minimize unnecessary and unsafe lane
changes, portions of Interstate Highways should be limited to “stay in your
lane” markings, with attendant signage |
|
Solution |
Just prior to and after exits and entrances, lane
changes are necessary. However, long
stretches on road should be controlled to stop aggressive drivers from
changing lanes, which slows traffic in all lanes. As with “no passing zones,” those areas where lane
changes can be prohibited should be appropriately marked, both on the road
“distinctive lines” and with roadside signs. Of course, before widespread adoption, 5 or 6
sections of Interstate should be prototyped for this type of control. |

Remarks |
By reducing the “urgency” and availability for
aggressive behavior, safer distances can be maintained between vehicles (in
the ‘same lane’), which will result in safer, smoother, and faster traffic
flow. |
